Additional Information
Dean Lister, also known as “The Boogeyman”, is a professional grappler who is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Jeffrey Higgs who gained notoriety within the BJJ world after he won the 2003 ADCC (the world’s most prestigious submission wrestling/Nogi event) in the open weight division. Dean Lister also has a background in wrestling and experience in Sambo and ventured through MMA competing in important organizations such as Pride FC and UFC.
Full Name: Dean Richard Lister
Nickname: The Boogeyman started in his early MMA days fighting for KOTC (King of the Cage organization). As one of his opponents injured himself before the fight, Lister was left with no opponent, and due him being a big name in the grappling circuit it was extremely hard to find a replacement, people did not want to fight him. Because of these, he started being called the Boogeyman.
Lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Rickson Gracie > Fabio Santos > Jeffrey Higgs > Dean Lister
Main Achievements:
Favorite Position/Submission: Guard and Footlocks
Dean Lister was born on the 13th of February 1976 in San Diego, California but spent most of his Childhood in Panama and Venezuela with his family who belonged to the military and was stationed in these countries. Being constantly the “new kid” in school, he was often in fights and had a rough time growing up due to bullying.
When he was 10 years old, Dean Lister read about Jiu-Jitsu for the first time, through an article in a magazine, but it wouldn’t be until years later that he would have his first BJJ class. When Dean returned to the United States to start high school, he decided to take on wrestling as an extracurricular activity. His coach, Jerry Matsumoto was also versed in submissions especially leg locks as he had some sambo experience. Dean Lister learned both Wrestling and some basic sambo techniques in which he became very savvy. Dean ended up testing himself in Sambo and had great success in the sport within the United States winning two national titles.
Dean Lister found jiu-jitsu shortly after he finished high school, he was very interested in the sport due to its success in mixed martial arts and decided to join Fabio Santos‘ gym. These were tough times in Dean Lister’s life as he had just joined college and was pretty much on his own, being a full-time worker, paying for his school tuition, rent, and jiu-jitsu. Dean Lister stated in an interview to the “On The Mat” website that his diet at the time consisted of: “bread, milk, cereal and top ramen(…)”
Dean Lister spent 8 years training with the gi, competing and winning tournaments for his instructor Fabio Santos, but he ended up splitting from Santos before receiving his black belt. There is a lot of speculation regarding how Lister got his black belt, but the main story circling in the BJJ forums is that Dean always had the idea of one day becoming an MMA fighter, he saw Jiu-Jitsu as a way to progress towards that, though his master Fabio Santos completely disagreed and did not want him to proceed through that route, they disagreed so much that Dean left the gym. One of Lister’s training partners at the academy, Jeffrey Higgs (who is a black belt under Fabio Santos) decided to award Lister his black belt, Santos was against this decision and expelled Higgs from the academy. Lister ended up proving he belonged amongst the black belt elite winning the ADCC in the open weight division that year.
Dean had tried his luck in Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) in 2000 and won his first match, losing the second to Ricardo Almeida. Lister ended up competing for the American trials again two years later, being advised to do so by “Kid Peligro”. He won the trials, and proceeded to the finals, again losing in his second fight (this time to Xande Ribeiro). By a stroke of luck, he was called the following day to fight in the open weight due to an injury of one of the fighters that were due to fight. Surprisingly for most people in the audience, Lister ended up winning the tournament submitting 3 of his 4 opponents.
His MMA career flourished after the exposure given by ADCC. Dean Lister went on to fight in the world’s biggest organizations, Pride FC and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He also became an important coach, with experience training professional MMA fighters like Tito Ortiz. Dean was on the Ultimate Fighter series 7 (TUF7) as a grappling coach for Team Ortiz.

Marcello grew up in the country that created Brazilian Jiu Jitsu…
At the age of 6 years old Marcello started learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Alvaro Barreto (Carlos and Helio Gracie’s student) at the Corpo Quatro Academy in Copacabana Rio De Janeiro/ Brazil. But at that age, Marcello was just a small kid that used to train on and off and he didn’t know how BJJ would change his life.
At the age of 16, Marcello started to take BJJ very serious in his life.
Many years ago, some of Carlson Gracie’s best students in Brazil were Sergio Souza “Bolao”, Ricardo De La Riva and Ricardo Juca. These were among many BJJ Masters that he had the opportunity to train with and helped his game. Marcello likes to speak about these 3 old masters.
Sergio Souza helped Marcello’s game for about 1 year. Sergio Souza is best known in Brazil for his “butterfly” guard.
De La Riva is best known for his “De La Riva Hook” and Ricardo Juca is best known in Brazil for his fighting strategies for back attacks and mount attacks. Juca also published in the very first BJJ book in Brazil.
For many years Marcello was considered De La Riva’s protege at his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy in Rio De Janeiro/Brazil. De La Riva showed Marcello all the secret details of his De La Riva Guard game. Juca showed Marcello all his fighting strategies while focusing on teaching Marcello the way he should think during a match.
Marcello helped De La Riva give BJJ lessons at his school for many years, until achieving his Black Belt in December of 1999.
In 1998 Marcello opened his first school in Nova Friburgo in Rio De Janeiro/Brazil where he has turned regular students into State, National and World Champions.
Marcello always says, “He was in the right place at the right time. He learned BJJ from the right sources, before it was regarded worldwide as a premier fighting art. Since 2003 Marcello has resided in Indianapolis/IN in the U.S. where he is continuing to fulfill his dream of spreading his knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He hopes to continue fulfilling his dream until the day he dies. And he hopes that even after he’s gone, his knowledge will continue to spread.
While in Brazil, Marcello attained many BJJ accomplishments:
He is the author of the first No Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu book called “Secret Positions.” Gracie Magazine launched Secret Positions on how to teach BJJ positions without a Gi. Gracie magazine sold the Secret Positions No Gi Book (at the Gracie Shop) in Brazil for approximately five years from 1998-2003. Marcello was the first person ever to show the Anaconda choke in a printed publication.
He took part in a BJJ documentary about De La Riva’s life and his created guard position known as the “De La Riva Hook”. In the documentary, Marcello was demonstrating some positions with De La Riva himself. In the video, Marcello was featured alongside many great masters such as Rickson Gracie, Carlson Gracie, Royler Gracie, Renzo Gracie, Ze Mario Sperry, Murilo Bustamante and Rodrigo Nogueira (Minotauro), telling about De La Riva’s life. That documentary is still currently sold in Japan.
Marcello won the first and only Carlson Gracie Competition Team “Tournament” in the lightweight division in Brazil. The tournament was organized by Ricardo Liborio to honor Carlson Gracie in 1997. Marcello won his final match against his friend Ari Galo (current Carlson Gracie coach at Carlson’s Academy in Rio de Janeiro/ Brazil since 2001).

As always, we want all of our competitors to have as much fun as possible, so we offer a well organized tournament that is fair and offers a ton of matches at a low price. Because there is no additional cost and it is double elimination, each competitor has the chance to compete a minimum of 6 times if they did all divisions in the gi and no gi tournaments (regular divisions and absolute divisions).
There will be children’s, teens, women’s, men’s (18-30), and masters divisions (31 and above). The weight classes for both gi and no gi will be as follows:
Adult Men (Masters class uses the same weight categories):
149.9 & Below
150 lbs. to 164.9 lbs.
165 lbs. to 179.9 lbs.
180 lbs. to 194.9 lbs.
195 lbs. to 209.9 lbs.
210 lbs. to 224.9 lbs.
225 lbs. & Above
***Many times there are not enough purple belt and above competitors to fill every weight class. In that case, we will make the weight classes as even as possible
Adult Women:
135 & Under (Lightweight)
136 & Over (Middleweight)
Weight classes for teens/children will be divided at the tournament but the age brackets will be divided as follows:
